PCOS and everyday nutrition: where to actually start

Beyond the internet's contradictory advice — the dietary changes that make the most difference, in the order worth attempting them.

A calm wellness scene with natural ingredients

PCOS is among the most common reasons women come to my clinic, and almost all of them arrive having read a great deal of contradictory advice online. Some of it is reasonable. A lot of it is not.

Where to start

  1. Protein at breakfast. The most common gap I see, and among the most useful to close.
  2. Fibre with every meal — it slows how quickly a meal is absorbed.
  3. Consistent meal timing. Long gaps followed by large meals tend to work against you.
  4. Movement most days. Resistance work is particularly worthwhile here.

What to be cautious about

Very restrictive elimination diets circulate widely in PCOS communities and are rarely sustainable. Long-term adherence beats theoretical optimisation, and restriction has its own costs.

If you are unsure where to begin, begin with breakfast. It is one meal, it is under your control, and it sets the pattern for the rest of the day.
