How to build a morning ritual that survives a bad week

Habits fail at the design stage, not from lack of discipline. A short guide to designing one that holds.

A morning wellness ritual scene

People do not abandon routines because they lack willpower. They abandon them because the routine was designed for a good week and then a bad week arrived.

Design for your worst morning

Whatever you build should be completable on the day you wake late with a headache. If it needs twenty minutes and a calm kitchen, it is not a habit — it is a good mood.

Anchor it to something fixed

New habits attach best to existing ones. After brushing your teeth. Before the first cup of tea. The anchor does the remembering so you do not have to.

  • Keep it under two minutes for the first month.
  • Put the object where you will see it — the jar on the counter, not in a cupboard.
  • Missing one day is normal. Missing two is how a habit ends.

Never miss twice. It is the only habit rule I ask patients to remember.
